SUNRISE - Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov will not require surgery after injuring his left knee early in the season, coach Paul Maurice confirmed Tuesday, with the team projecting a rehabilitation timeline of 6-8 weeks that would have Barkov back sometime in late November or December.
The update came after a day of uncertainty, during which a social media report circulated Monday suggesting Barkov could miss 10-12 weeks. Maurice, speaking to reporters in Los Angeles after the Panthers practiced there, pushed back sharply on that figure before medical testing was complete. “Do not bet your hard-earned money on that one,” Maurice said. “I know you can bet on anything these days. But hang onto your cash, truly. If I don’t know, no one else does. That’s fair. … We need a certain amount of information before we can make our best estimation. We don’t have that information yet. So, everybody’s guessing. He’s in with doctors.”
Once testing was complete Tuesday, Maurice offered a clearer picture, according to Florida Hockey Now. “That’s our best window,” Maurice said via Jameson Olive. “Could be a little less, could be a little more.”
Barkov sustained the injury during the second period of Florida’s second game of the season, when his left leg appeared to give out while he was battling for a puck in the corner. He flew back to South Florida to meet with team doctors Monday. Maurice had declined to specify the injury beyond calling it a “lower body” ailment.
The Panthers placed Barkov on long-term injured reserve Saturday, generating approximately $4 million in salary cap relief. Under NHL rules, Barkov must miss at least 10 games and 24 days before he can return from LTIR. The earliest he would be eligible to come off the list is Oct. 27, when Florida faces the Winnipeg Jets.
The injury is the second significant knee setback for Barkov in as many years. He missed the entirety of the 2025-26 season after requiring reconstructive surgery on his right knee following an injury on the first day of training camp that year.
With Barkov sidelined, the Panthers face the Los Angeles Kings Tuesday night at Crypto Arena at 10 p.m. on ESPN. Florida defeated Los Angeles 2-0 last season; the Kings lead the all-time regular season series 27-17-1 with 3 ties. The Panthers’ home opener is scheduled for Saturday at 6 p.m. against the Minnesota Wild.
