LOS ANGELES - Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov will miss six to eight weeks with a lower-body injury suffered Oct. 1, the team announced Tuesday, with surgery ruled out in a diagnosis that spared the two-time Stanley Cup champion a repeat of the season-ending knee injury that cost him all of last year.

Head coach Paul Maurice, speaking at a morning skate at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, called the timeline the team’s best realistic window. “That’s our best window,” Maurice said. “Could be a little less, could be a little more.”

The relief inside the Panthers organization was palpable. Barkov missed all of last season with a right knee injury - an absence that stretched six to eight months - making Tuesday’s prognosis a dramatically better outcome. “If he hadn’t been injured last year, we would’ve thought six to eight weeks is a long time,” Maurice said. “I think last year was six to eight months, so we’re taking it.”

Barkov, 31, had been placed on long-term injured reserve last week after getting hurt in the team’s second game of the season. He had logged 20:32 of ice time in Florida’s 1-0 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Sept. 29 before the injury struck. He arrived at training camp in strong form after captaining Finland to gold at the IIHF World Championship in May, posting 11 points - three goals and eight assists - across 10 games in that tournament.

The Panthers’ all-time leader in goals (286), assists (496), points (782) and games played (806), Barkov helped lead Florida to back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2024 and 2025. His absence registers throughout the locker room. “He’s our captain and we miss him,” Maurice said. “He feels it when he’s not around. He’s probably the happiest of all of us [with his recovery timeline].”

Rookie forward Sandis Vilmanis echoed the sentiment. “It’s Barky. He’s one of the best players in the league,” Vilmanis said. “Amazing to hear the good news. We just can’t wait to see him on the ice again.”

With Barkov sidelined, Sam Reinhart has shifted from the wing back to center, joining Sam Bennett, Anton Lundell and Lars Eller as Florida’s options down the middle. Maurice expressed confidence in the transition. “He had no issues slipping into the middle,” Maurice said of Reinhart. “There was no issue or a lag in his thinking or processing of the game. That was pretty easy for us.”

The Panthers conclude a four-game road trip tonight against the Los Angeles Kings at Crypto.com Arena, with puck drop set for 10 p.m. ET.
