TAMPA - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers dismantled the Carolina Panthers in all three phases Sunday, rushing for 258 yards, forcing five sacks and scoring 20 points off turnovers in a 30-point victory that ranks as the 10th-largest margin of victory in franchise history and the team’s largest since a 48-14 rout of Carolina in 2024.
The offensive game plan centered on exploiting Carolina’s 27th-ranked run defense, and Tampa Bay delivered. The Buccaneers’ 258 rushing yards rank fourth-most in a single game in franchise history, and the team threw the ball just 11 times - the third-fewest pass attempts in franchise history, behind only two games with 10 attempts in 1977 and 1979.
“They did a great job moving the ball,” said Head Coach Todd Bowles. “We talked about it before the game. We had to control time of possession and keep them out there because they are very explosive on their offensive side of the ball. We cashed in. We didn’t settle for too many plays, we got touchdowns. We made plays, we got turnovers, it was a full-team effort.”
Running back Bucky Irving led the ground attack with 24 carries for 106 yards at a 4.4-yard average and two touchdowns, his first career multi-score rushing game and fifth career 100-yard performance. Irving logged 11 touches for 51 yards and a score on the opening drive alone. Kenny Gainwell added a season-best 88 rushing yards on 14 carries, and Sean Tucker broke a 46-yard touchdown run - finishing with seven carries for 52 yards at a 7.4-yard average - his second rushing score of the season and 11th of his career. Tight end Payne Durham’s block on the pull created the crease for Tucker’s long score.
Returning from a three-game absence with a dislocated right thumb, quarterback Baker Mayfield completed seven of his 11 pass attempts for 64 yards and a touchdown, eased back into action by the dominant ground game.
The defense was equally dominant. Linebacker Yaya Diaby recorded three of the team’s five sacks, two coming off bull rushes. Defensive tackle Al-Quadin Muhammad forced a fumble on a strip sack that Calijah Kancey returned 32 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter, helping Tampa Bay build a 17-0 lead. Cornerbacks Zyon McCollum and Tykee Smith each recorded interceptions. Panthers quarterback Bryce Young, who entered the game leading the NFL with 306.8 passing yards per game, was held to 163 yards on 14 completions from 27 attempts. Carolina’s offense finished with 266 total yards.
Special teams contributed as well. After Young connected with Darren Waller on a 50-yard touchdown pass, Smith blocked the ensuing extra point and McCollum scooped the ball and returned it the length of the field for a two-point play. Ko Kieft recovered a muffed punt by David Moore that set up a Chase McLaughlin 22-yard field goal.
Llinebacker Josiah Trotter led Tampa Bay with nine tackles Sunday, pushing his season total to 57 - surpassing the franchise record of 49 set by Lavonte David through his first six career games in 2012. The Buccaneers return to action in Week 8.
