TAMPA - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers host the Minnesota Vikings at Raymond James Stadium on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. ET, needing their first win of 2026 to avoid an 0-3 start that only four teams since 1990 have survived to reach the postseason - a feat Tampa Bay itself has accomplished just once, in the strike-shortened 1982 season.
The Buccaneers dropped a 23-19 decision to the Cleveland Browns in Week Two, their second straight loss after opening against Cincinnati. Head Coach Todd Bowles acknowledged the mounting pressure Monday. “I think [there is] always pressure until you get your first win out [of] the way,” Bowles said. “You know, you try to get it out the way at the beginning of the season so you don’t have to worry about it anymore. It’s not a different kind of pressure, so to speak. It’s probably a different kind of urgency - not that you’re not playing urgent already - but you just want to get that first win on the board.”
Tampa Bay’s problems run deeper than the record. The Buccaneers carry a -4 turnover ratio, tied for second-worst in the NFL, and quarterback Baker Mayfield has absorbed seven sacks across two games. The team’s five offensive giveaways have directly produced 27 points for opponents - one behind Atlanta for the most in the league - a particularly damaging figure given that both losses came by six and four points. Over the past 10 seasons, the Buccaneers hold a .182 winning percentage in games with a negative turnover ratio, dropping to .111 when they lose the turnover battle by two or more.
Bright spots have emerged. Running back Bucky Irving has posted 183 yards from scrimmage at 5.4 yards per carry, and rookie linebacker Josiah Trotter has recorded 21 tackles, 1.0 sack and a pick-six through two games. Despite the 0-2 record, Tampa Bay sits just one game behind the co-leading Panthers and Saints in the NFC South, with 15 games remaining.
Minnesota arrives as one of the league’s most disruptive defenses, allowing just 12.5 points per game while generating eight sacks and four takeaways. According to Pro Football Focus, the Vikings have blitzed on 79.3% of their defensive snaps through two weeks - by far the highest rate in the NFL and well ahead of the Carolina Panthers, the only other team above 50% at 53.2%. Opposing quarterbacks have managed just a 75.6 passer rating against the Brian Flores-coordinated scheme. Mayfield, who has been pressured on 40.3% of his dropbacks and posted a -20.1 EPA on sack plays, has not yet faced a high blitz rate this season, having seen blitzes on just 21.1% of snaps.
The Vikings will also have their starting quarterback back. Head Coach Kevin O’Connell announced Monday that Kyler Murray has cleared the NFL’s concussion protocol and will return to the lineup after missing most of Week One and all of Week Two. Murray, the first-overall pick in the 2019 draft, has thrown for more than 20,000 career yards and rushed for more than 3,200. Carson Wentz filled in capably - throwing for 276 yards and three touchdowns without an interception across 45 dropbacks - but took six sacks in that span. Murray’s mobility is expected to complicate Tampa Bay’s pass-rush opportunities. Wide receiver Justin Jefferson has caught 11 passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns through two games.
