TAMPA — The Buccaneers are doubling down on two-back offensive sets this training camp under new Offensive Coordinator Zac Robinson, pairing Rachaad White and Kenny Gainwell in a “pony” package that Head Coach Todd Bowles said creates matchup problems for opposing defenses.

Tampa Bay ran just 52 plays with more than one running back on the field in 2025, averaging 4.7 yards per play with a 35% success rate — well below the 44% success rate Robinson’s Atlanta Falcons achieved on 101 two-back snaps that same season. Robinson’s Falcons averaged 4.8 yards on those plays, using roughly 9.7% of their overall snaps in 21 personnel.

“That’s the initial beginnings of it right now, when they’re both on the field at the same time,” Bowles said after Thursday’s practice. “They both can flex out and play in the slot, they both can do jet motion, and they both can touch the ball. It makes it tough to figure out who’s doing what.”

Gainwell, who topped 1,000 yards from scrimmage and caught 73 passes last season, is eager to share the backfield with Bucky Irving, who surpassed 1,500 yards from scrimmage as a rookie in 2024 but lost a significant portion of his sophomore season to a shoulder injury. In 2025’s two-back sets, Irving ran 16 times and caught one pass while White ran seven times and caught seven passes.

“I think it’s a great thing getting both of us out there, and, you know, him being back balling — I’m super excited to see him back on the field,” Gainwell said. “I think it’s just great to see us both out there on the field at the same time — I love it.”

Beyond the backfield, Robinson identified the wide receiver depth chart as a critical camp competition following Mike Evans’ departure in free agency. Chris Godwin Jr. enters his 10th season with four 1,000-yard campaigns, Emeka Egbuka is settling into the “Z” position after a productive rookie year, and Jalen McMillan is eyeing a breakout third season. Second-year receiver Tez Johnson has emerged as a standout through the first week.

“The wideout position is really deep,” Robinson said. “I know Tez has had a great camp, you guys have seen him out at practice. He’s making explosive plays every single day. You feel his juice out there.”

The Bucs also used a third-round pick on Georgia State’s Ted Hurst and added free agent David Sills, who followed Robinson from Atlanta after his most productive NFL season. At quarterback, undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels out of Kansas — who compiled 9,282 passing yards, 67 touchdown passes, 1,445 rushing yards and 23 rushing touchdowns across 49 college games from 2020-25 — is competing with returning Connor Bazelak for a roster spot behind starter Baker Mayfield and veteran backup Jake Browning.

“I like his arm strength,” Bowles said of Daniels. “He can make some very unconventional throws. Obviously, you want to see the normal stuff as well, but when he gets in trouble he can get himself out of trouble, and that’s big.”

Second-year cornerback Benjamin Morrison is currently missing practices with a lingering hamstring issue from the offseason. The Bucs’ preseason opener will provide the first live-game look at Robinson’s pony package and the wide receiver competition.
