Coral Springs Mayor Scott Brook led a peace walk Saturday to honor Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer, the 38-year-old public servant who died suddenly, as residents and city officials gathered to mourn her unexpected loss. The community walk through a garden brought together neighbors and friends who remembered Metayer for her warmth and dedication to the city where she was born and raised.

“This is just such a devastating loss,” said Jeff Adelman, a friend of Metayer. The vice mayor’s sudden death left many in the community struggling to comprehend the loss of someone who had become a cornerstone of local government. Adelman joined dozens of other residents who participated in the memorial walk organized by city leadership.

“Honestly today is so surreal. I don’t want to believe this even occurred. She was such a sweet person,” said Coral Springs Commissioner Joe McHugh. McHugh worked closely with Metayer on the city commission and shared personal memories of their recent interactions. His comments reflected the broader sentiment among city officials who had collaborated with Metayer on municipal matters.

“The vice mayor just always had a smile. She would come into a room and it would be lighter,” Brook said during the memorial gathering. The mayor’s remarks highlighted Metayer’s reputation for bringing positivity to city meetings and community events. Brook emphasized how Metayer’s presence had a transformative effect on the atmosphere of municipal proceedings and public gatherings.

McHugh recalled a recent personal interaction that exemplified Metayer’s warm personality and approach to public service. “The best memory I have was just last week,” said McHugh. “I went to go shake one of our commissioners’ hands and she goes, ‘Where’s my hug?’ And I gave her a big hug.” The anecdote illustrated the personal connections Metayer maintained with her fellow commissioners and the informal, caring approach she brought to her official duties.

The peace walk provided an opportunity for community members to share memories and offer mutual support during the grieving process. Hugs and shared recollections offered comfort to those who had worked closely with Metayer in her role as vice mayor. The gathering demonstrated the strong bonds Metayer had formed throughout her service to Coral Springs, where she had lived her entire life.

“I know the impact she had on me,” Brook said. “I’m inspired every day by her while she was here and I continue to be inspired by her.” The mayor’s tribute emphasized Metayer’s lasting influence on city leadership and her colleagues’ commitment to carrying forward her legacy of public service. Brook’s comments suggested that Metayer’s approach to governance and community engagement would continue to guide the city’s leadership moving forward.
