TALLAHASSEE — Gov. Ron DeSantis directed flags at three locations across the state to be flown at half-staff Friday in honor of former U.S. Rep. Bill Posey, the longtime Brevard County Republican who died last month at the age of 78.
Posey died May 9 after a career in public service that spanned local government, the Florida Legislature and 16 years in Congress. DeSantis issued a memorandum ordering the United States and State of Florida flags lowered from sunrise to sunset on June 13 at the State Capitol in Tallahassee, the Brevard County Courthouse and Palm Bay City Hall.
“Former Representative Posey lived an honorable life of service and always displayed his unwavering dedication to the citizens of Florida,” DeSantis wrote in the memorandum. “Our prayers go out to his family.”
Posey began his career in several local roles in Rockledge, Florida, before winning seats in the Florida House of Representatives and the Florida Senate. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2009, representing Florida’s 8th Congressional District until 2013. He was subsequently elected to represent Florida’s 15th Congressional District and served until 2025.
The memorandum was addressed to Brian Fienemann, director of Real Estate Management and Development; Thad Altman, chair of the Brevard Board of County Commissioners; and Rob Medina, mayor of the City of Palm Bay — the officials responsible for the three flagpole locations named in the order.
Flags at the designated locations are set to return to full-staff at sunset on June 13.
