TALLAHASSEE — Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered state offices closed on Thursday, July 2, and Monday, July 6, giving nearly 100,000 state workers a five-day holiday weekend as the nation marks its 250th anniversary of independence.
The two additional days off bookend the regular state holiday observance of Independence Day on Friday, July 3, creating an unbroken stretch from Wednesday evening through the following Tuesday morning for employees in the State Personnel System.
“America’s 250th anniversary is a historic milestone and an opportunity to reflect on the courage, sacrifice, and enduring principles that established the United States as the freest and most prosperous nation in the world,” said Gov. DeSantis.
“As Florida leads the nation’s semiquincentennial celebration, I am pleased to provide state employees additional time to celebrate our country’s founding, participate in America 250 events, and spend time with family and friends honoring the blessings of liberty that generations of Americans have fought to preserve,” DeSantis said.
Florida has been staging educational initiatives, community events and historical exhibits throughout 2026 as part of its semiquincentennial programming. The governor’s office directed residents to America250FL.com, the state’s official hub for anniversary celebrations, for schedules and local events.
The extended weekend is the latest in a series of state-level observances tied to the 250th anniversary. State agencies are expected to resume normal operations on Tuesday, July 7.
