Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue saved 20 people from dangerous rip currents in 12 separate incidents Sunday as high-risk conditions continued to plague South Florida beaches. The rescues occurred as the National Weather Service maintained high-risk rip current warnings for Miami Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach areas.

The weekend proved particularly treacherous for beachgoers, with Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue reporting 34 people were rescued in 18 separate incidents Saturday. The back-to-back days of multiple rescues highlight the persistent danger facing swimmers and waders along the South Florida coast as ocean conditions remain volatile.

“Red and Purple flags for Man of War Sea Pests and rough ocean conditions with rip currents,” the City of Fort Lauderdale said in a statement. “Remember that the ocean is a dynamic environment that is constantly changing. For up-to-date beach safety information, please consult the Lifeguards on the guarded section of Fort Lauderdale Beach.”

The National Weather Service extended high-risk rip current warnings beyond South Florida to include areas in Northern Florida, indicating the dangerous conditions span much of the state’s Atlantic coastline. Rip currents are powerful, narrow channels of fast-moving water that can pull swimmers away from shore at speeds of up to 8 feet per second, faster than an Olympic swimmer.

Fort Lauderdale’s guarded beach sections provide the most current safety information through on-duty lifeguards who monitor changing conditions throughout the day. The city’s warning system uses colored flags to alert beachgoers to various hazards, with red flags indicating high hazard conditions and purple flags warning of dangerous marine life like Portuguese Man of War jellyfish.

The 54 total rescues across Saturday and Sunday in Fort Lauderdale alone demonstrate the scale of the current threat facing beach visitors. Emergency responders continue monitoring conditions as the high-risk rip current warnings remain in effect for South Florida’s popular beach destinations.
