Florida State University kicker Conor McAneney was arrested Wednesday in Fort Lauderdale on multiple charges, according to jail records obtained by Local 10 News Thursday. McAneney, 20, was booked on charges of battery on a police officer, firefighter or EMT, resisting an officer with violence, and trespassing in an occupied structure or conveyance. Records show McAneney’s bond was set at $2,750, and he remained behind bars at the Broward Main Jail as of Thursday morning.
Fort Lauderdale police said at approximately 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, McAneney was arrested following a trespassing incident at Rock Bar, located at 225 S. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd. According to the arrest report, McAneney was being removed from the establishment by security and was resisting when police stepped in to assist. “The defendant began to grab onto the barrier gates to the business, so I grabbed him under his arms in attempt to make him release his grip,” an officer wrote in McAneney’s arrest report.
The situation escalated when McAneney became physical with the responding officer. “Once away from the bar, I let go of the defendant who then grabbed by arm/shirt and attempted to pull me down, placing me off balance, (and) nearly falling through the barrier into the roadway where traffic was flowing,” the officer wrote in the report. The responding officer then punched McAneney two times in the face and brought him to the ground where he continued to “actively resist our attempts to place him into custody” before he was eventually taken to jail.
Police stated that McAneney had been removed from several bars through the evening for “causing disturbances.” “It should be noted that the defendant had been removed from several bars throughout the evening for causing disturbances,” the report said. McAneney was taken to a local hospital before he was booked into jail following the altercation with police.
FSU’s website states that McAneney is from Plumbridge, Ireland, and he is listed as a sophomore on the team. McAneney, a sophomore from Plumbridge, Ireland, played last year for Quincy University in Illinois before transferring to FSU, according to his FSU bio. State prosecutors said in bond court Thursday that he is visiting South Florida while on spring break.
The arrest comes during a critical time for the Florida State football program as they prepare for spring practice and the upcoming season. McAneney’s status with the team remains unclear as the university has not yet issued a statement regarding the arrest. The charges he faces carry serious implications for both his legal standing and his athletic career at the Tallahassee-based university.
Local 10 News has requested the full arrest report from the Fort Lauderdale Police Department for additional details about the incident. The case will likely proceed through the Broward County court system, with McAneney’s next court appearance expected to be scheduled in the coming days.
