FORT LAUDERDALE — Inter Miami CF captain Leo Messi scored his 117th career goal with Argentina during the international window, becoming the oldest player to score for La Albiceleste, as eight club players represented their national teams in World Cup and youth tournament preparation matches.
Messi converted a penalty in the 72nd minute of Argentina’s 3-0 win over Iceland at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Alabama. Midfielder Rodrigo De Paul provided the assist on Argentina’s third and final goal of the evening. The pair had also suited up for Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Honduras at Kyle Field in College Station, Texas, where De Paul entered as a halftime substitute and Messi remained an unused substitute.
Argentina will open its World Cup campaign in Group J on Tuesday, June 16, facing Algeria at 9 p.m. ET.
Goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair helped Canada close out its pre-tournament schedule with a pair of friendlies. St. Clair entered as a halftime substitute and helped keep a clean sheet in Canada’s 2-0 victory over Uzbekistan at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton. He remained an unused substitute in Canada’s 1-1 draw against Ireland. Canada, one of the tournament’s three host nations, will begin Group B play on Friday, June 12, against Bosnia and Herzegovina at 3 p.m. ET.
Midfielder Telasco Segovia registered assists in both of Venezuela’s friendlies. He set up Venezuela’s lone goal in a 2-1 defeat to Turkey at Inter Miami CF Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, then earned a starting spot against Iraq at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois, and again assisted in a 2-0 victory. Homegrown midfielder David Ruiz entered in the 62nd minute for Honduras in its 2-0 loss to Argentina, facing Inter Miami teammates Messi and De Paul.
Three Inter Miami academy products also saw international action. Santiago Morales and Daniel Pinter joined the United States U-19 Men’s National Team for a training camp in Fayetteville, Georgia, where the U.S. U-19s defeated Japan U-19 by a 5-2 scoreline. Alexander Shaw, who received his first-ever international call-up in March, featured in the starting lineup for the United States U-18 Men’s National Team, which fell 2-0 to Sweden U-18 before rebounding with a 2-0 victory over Qatar U-18.
Inter Miami’s World Cup contingent will be in action within days, with St. Clair and Canada opening Group B play Friday and Messi and De Paul leading Argentina into Group J on Tuesday.
