JACKSONVILLE - Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen credited the team’s practice habits Monday for a dominant 35-6 victory over the 1-2 New England Patriots at EverBank Stadium, a win that pushed the AFC South-leading Jaguars to 2-1 and extended Coen’s regular-season record with the club to 15-5.
“That is the challenge in the National Football League that exists,” Coen said, framing the team’s ability to sustain its preparation standards as the defining test of the season. He drew a direct line between how the Jaguars practiced last week - following a road loss to the Denver Broncos - and how they performed Sunday. “Pretty clear message in terms of, ‘All right, guys, how we practiced going into Denver and how we played versus how we practiced going into Cleveland [in Week 1] and how we played,’ " Coen said. “Like it’s right there. It’s so clear and obvious.”
Cornback Jourdan Lewis echoed that message. “Like we’ve talked about before, it is about the process,” Lewis said. “Every time we go out on the field, our process needs to be the same. It has to be relentless, it has to be intense, and it has to be game-like so the game is easy. Anytime that you have a loss like we did, you want to have a response and be mentally tough enough to go out there and handle business like we did.”
The blueprint is familiar. In Week 10 of 2025, Jacksonville blew a 19-point fourth-quarter lead in a 36-29 road loss to the Houston Texans, then reeled off eight consecutive victories to close the regular season - the first of those a 35-6 home win over the Los Angeles Chargers. The Jaguars have now followed each of their four regular-season losses under Coen with a victory. Their 15-5 record over 20 games under Coen is tied for fourth best in the NFL during that span.
“What we are trying to build is consistency,” Coen said. “The only way to earn and get respect in this league is through that, is through consistency.”
Quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw three touchdowns and one interception Sunday, giving him seven touchdown passes against two interceptions through three games this season. The performance was Lawrence’s 13th career game with three or more touchdown passes, moving him past Mark Brunell for the most such games in franchise history. Lawrence now has 104 career touchdown passes, second on the franchise’s all-time list, and has thrown 25 touchdown passes over his last 10 games - tied for the most by a Jaguars quarterback in any 10-game span. “Trevor played really well yesterday, to be honest,” Coen said. “I thought he did a nice job of taking the profits, being able to control it … I just thought he did a really nice job. He had very good command of the system this week, and the preparation was there.”
Coen said rookie defensive tackle Albert Regis, who missed Sunday’s game with an elbow injury, is expected to return when Jacksonville hosts the Cincinnati Bengals next Sunday. “We’ll have to look at what it looks like in practice this week,” Coen said. “It wasn’t something that should be out more than this past game. We were kind of being smart with him this week. He could have gone.”
“How do we simulate, replicate, but also elevate the standard so that we keep building week in and week out,” Coen said. “That’s where obviously leadership, players, we all have to be extremely accountable in understanding what it truly takes to go win games on Sundays.” The Bengals game at EverBank Stadium kicks off Sunday.
