JACKSONVILLE — The Jaguars’ young defensive line delivered a breakout performance in a 24-20 comeback victory over the New Orleans Saints in Preseason Week 1, offering Head Coach Liam Coen a glimpse of the interior pass rush Jacksonville has been chasing — even as offensive line injuries cloud the weeks ahead.

Defensive tackle Albert Regis and veteran defensive tackle Ruke Orhorhoro each registered sacks, with Orhorhoro sharing his with defensive end Danny Striggow on a third-down play that forced an early Saints three-and-out. Edge rusher B.J. Green II recovered a fumble forced by linebacker Yasir Abdullah’s strip sack of Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler, and undrafted rookie defensive end Bryan Thomas Jr. added a late sack after applying consistent pressure throughout the second half.

The defensive surge mattered because Jacksonville’s offense sputtered early, falling behind 20-6 before mounting a second-half rally. Quarterback Carter Bradley led a 10-play drive to open the third quarter, capping it with a touchdown pass to tight end Hunter Long, then engineered a 17-play field goal drive. Quarterback Joey Aguilar connected with rookie wide receiver Trebor Peña on a fourth-quarter throw that set up the go-ahead touchdown run by rookie running back J’Mari Taylor, who finished with 78 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries.

Cornerback Jabbar Muhammad sealed the win by knocking away a pass in the end zone on the game’s final play — one snap after being flagged for pass interference on the same drive. Rookie safety Jalen Huskey added three tackles and a pass defensed.

The comeback pleased Coen, who said at halftime he wanted to see his team respond to adversity. He described the quality he was looking for: “A tough team that could stand strong, absorb body blows, then start punching back.”

But the victory came with a cost. Injuries to offensive linemen Walker Little, Patrick Mekari and Chuma Edoga have thinned a position group Coen needs healthy for joint practices this week against the Carolina Panthers and next week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. “Unfortunately, we have that bug at the moment,” Coen said. “We just have to get through it. We have two weeks of good work ahead that we need to take a step in the right direction. This is the time in training camp where these things sometimes pop up. Unfortunately, it is at a position which is hard to function when you have depth issues and injuries. We will get through it and be all right.” None of the injuries are thought to be season-ending.

Rookie receivers Josh Cameron and CJ Williams also flashed during the game, joining Peña as young pass catchers the Jaguars are counting on for the future. Abdullah’s strip sack and special teams tackles may have solidified his place on the 53-man roster.

Jacksonville hosts the Panthers at EverBank Stadium on Friday for Preseason Week 2, following a joint practice session earlier in the week.
