JUPITER — Jake McCutcheon delivered a walk-off double to clinch a 1-0 victory over Tampa in Game 3 of the Florida State League Finals, giving the Jupiter Hammerheads their second league championship in four years after the team weathered three rain delays lasting an hour and 51 minutes at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.
The title is the fourth for a Miami Marlins affiliate in the past five years, following Double-A Pensacola’s Southern League crown in 2022 and Triple-A Jacksonville’s International League title in 2025. Marlins manager Clayton McCullough, who traveled up I-95 to Jupiter last Thursday to watch the Hammerheads sweep their first-round series, said the winning culture matters for player development.
“I think it’s great,” McCullough said. “Winning is important. I think there’s a world in where you develop at a very high rate while also winning games.”
“When they get here, all that matters is winning and losing. There is that feeling, that type of pressure a little bit and playing for something, you hope in some small way prepares them for when they get here,” McCullough added.
Starting pitcher Manuel Genao set the tone in the finale with eight strikeouts while allowing just two hits and one walk across five innings on 68 pitches, 46 of them strikes at a 67 percent clip. Southpaw Elier Morillo followed with eight strikeouts across four innings, surrendering one hit and two walks. Jupiter’s pitching staff allowed only eight runs across five playoff games — half of those coming in the team’s lone loss — and led the league with 1,371 strikeouts this season at a 27.1 percent rate.
FSL MVP Vargas powered the offense all year, leading the circuit in hits (121), home runs (27), RBIs (94), slugging (.611) and OPS (.983) while posting a 41.7 percent hard-hit rate. He carried that production into the postseason, going 8-for-22 with two homers and a double. Genao, one of two Hammerheads named to the FSL All-Star team alongside southpaw Julio Mendez, posted a 3.67 ERA across a team-best 108 innings with 116 strikeouts and a 7.2 percent walk rate in 28 outings.
The Hammerheads’ roster featured several of the Marlins’ top prospects, including 2026 first-round pick Jacob Lombard, ranked No. 3 in the organization and No. 66 in baseball. The team also showcased 18-year-old bonus baby Andrew Salas, speedy shortstop Luis Arana, center fielder Luis Cova and 2026 third-rounder Cam Kozeal. Outfielder Valor contributed 58 stolen bases — caught just seven times for an 89.2 percent success rate that ranked seventh among 29 minor leaguers with at least 50 steals — along with a career-high 14 home runs in 115 games, though his strikeout rate climbed to a career-high 33.5 percent.
The Hammerheads also won the FSL title in 2023, but this marked their first championship clinched at home in Jupiter.
