TAMPA — The Tampa Bay Lightning made their biggest splash of free agency by signing veteran defenseman John Carlson to a two-year contract worth an average annual value of $8.5 million, vice president and general manager Julien BriseBois announced.
Carlson, 36, brings 1,159 career NHL games to Tampa Bay, having recorded 170 goals and 785 points across stints with the Washington Capitals and Anaheim Ducks. He won the Stanley Cup with Washington in 2018, was a Norris Trophy runner-up in 2020 and was named to two NHL All-Star Games in 2019 and 2020. The Natick, Massachusetts native is Washington’s all-time leader among defensemen in games played (1,143), goals (166), assists (605) and points (771).
Carlson skated in 55 games with Washington last season, recording 10 goals and 46 points with a plus-11 rating before being traded to Anaheim on March 5 in exchange for a conditional first-round pick in 2026 and a third-round pick in 2027. He added four goals and 14 points in 16 regular-season games with the Ducks, then registered six assists across 12 Stanley Cup Playoff games while averaging 24:03 in ice time per game, third on the team. He was drafted 27th overall by the Capitals in the first round of the 2008 NHL Draft.
BriseBois also locked up forward Ilya Mikheyev to a four-year contract worth an AAV of $3.85 million. Mikheyev, 31, played in 77 games with the Chicago Blackhawks last season, recording 18 goals and 36 points while averaging 17:26 in time on ice per contest. He ranked fourth on Chicago for points and was tied for the team lead with a plus-2 rating. The Omsk, Russia native has 98 goals and 201 points in 427 career NHL games with Chicago, the Vancouver Canucks and the Toronto Maple Leafs, having scored 20 or more goals twice in his career.
Forward Jeffrey Viel signed a five-year contract worth an AAV of $2.5 million. Viel, 29, played in 10 games with the Boston Bruins last season, logging 30 penalty minutes, before being traded to the Anaheim Ducks on Jan. 16 in exchange for a fourth-round pick in 2026. He appeared in 35 games with the Ducks, notching three goals and 10 points with 49 penalty minutes. The Rimouski, Quebec native has 99 career NHL games with the San Jose Sharks, Boston and Anaheim, registering six goals, 15 points and 232 penalty minutes. Viel was originally undrafted and signed with San Jose as a free agent on May 28, 2019.
BriseBois rounded out the day by signing defenseman Michael Callahan and goaltenders Mads Sogaard and Olivier Rodrigue to one-year, two-way contracts. The five signings signal an aggressive retooling by Tampa Bay’s front office heading into the 2026-27 season.
