TALLAHASSEE — A 54-year-old Madison, Florida, man faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years in federal prison and up to life behind bars after a grand jury indicted him on charges of armed methamphetamine trafficking and illegal firearm possession, U.S. Attorney John P. Heekin announced.
Frederick Allen Smith Jr. was charged with possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine and 500 grams or more of a mixture containing methamphetamine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Smith appeared for arraignment before U.S. Magistrate Judge Martin A. Fitzpatrick in Tallahassee.
The firearms charge tied to the drug trafficking offense carries a mandatory minimum of 5 years’ imprisonment to be served consecutively to any other sentence. The felon-in-possession count carries up to 15 years’ imprisonment. Combined, the charges expose Smith to decades in federal prison if convicted.
The case grew out of a joint investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Emma Schwan is prosecuting.
Heekin’s office said the case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide Department of Justice initiative aimed at eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations and protecting communities from violent crime.
An indictment is not evidence of guilt; all defendants are presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial. Smith’s jury trial is scheduled for July 20, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. before U.S. District Court Judge Robert L. Hinkle in Tallahassee.
