Ryan Jennings, a father and husband from Cumberland, Maine, died April 1 after saving two of his children from a rip current at Juno Beach during a family vacation. The incident occurred while the family was visiting Florida, according to police reports. Jennings successfully rescued his children from the dangerous water conditions but lost his own life in the process.
“No one can say enough good things about who Ryan Jennings was,” said Dr. Geraldine Ollila, who knew Jennings and created a GoFundMe campaign for his family. The fundraising effort has generated significant community support, with more than $176,000 donated as of Monday at 5 p.m. Jennings leaves behind his wife Emily and their three young children, with a fourth child on the way.
“Obviously, there’s no way to fully understand the grief and what they’re having to process,” Ollila said. “And specifically with their three young children and one on the way.” The family had recently learned they were expecting their fourth child, adding another layer of complexity to their loss. Jennings served as a coach for his son’s middle school teams and was deeply involved in his community.
Cristina Hepburn, who worked with Jennings several years ago, remembered his devotion to his family. “My colleagues and I have been talking about this devastating loss and that’s what we are all saying is that his eyes would practically sparkle when he talked about his wife and his family,” Hepburn said. She described Jennings as someone who embodied kindness and authenticity in all his interactions.
“He really was very kind and just really wore his heart on his sleeve and a really all-around good human being,” Hepburn continued. Colleagues and friends consistently described Jennings as a person who prioritized his family above all else. His commitment to his wife Emily and their children was evident to everyone who knew him, according to those who worked alongside him.
Ollila shared similar sentiments about Jennings’ character and community standing. “Everyone knows him in the community as just an upstanding guy, a loyal, loyal husband, an exceptional son, father,” Ollila said. The widespread support for the GoFundMe campaign reflects the impact Jennings had on those around him throughout his life.
Rip currents pose a significant danger to beachgoers along Florida’s coastline, particularly during certain weather and tide conditions. Juno Beach, located in Palm Beach County, experiences these dangerous water conditions that can quickly pull swimmers away from shore. The incident highlights the ongoing risks that families face when visiting Florida’s beaches, even during what should be relaxing vacation time.
“And the family is very united, but just in an absolute, understandable, deep state of grief and processing,” Ollila said. The community response through the GoFundMe campaign demonstrates the support network rallying around the Jennings family during this difficult time. The funds raised will help support Emily Jennings and her children as they navigate life without Ryan’s presence and income.
