MIAMI - The Miami Marlins will not bring back hitting coach Pedro Guerrero for the 2027 season, president of baseball operations Peter Bendix announced Tuesday, parting ways with a coach whose offense ranked in the middle of the pack across most major categories despite a respectable on-base percentage.
Guerrero, 37, spent two seasons as the Marlins’ hitting coach after serving as an assistant hitting coach for the Philadelphia Phillies from 2018 to 2021 and the San Francisco Giants from 2022 to 2024, and as bench coach for the Rookie Level Los Angeles Dodgers in 2016 and 2017.
“He did a tremendous job for us,” Bendix said. “He’s a wonderful human being. We’re going to miss having him around, and really appreciate everything that Pedro gave to us. Just time for a new voice in the hitting space.”
In 2026, Miami ranked tied for fifth in the majors in on-base percentage at .326 and seventh in batting average at .249, but fell to 18th in runs per game at 4.41, tied for 16th in slugging percentage at .400, and tied for 11th in FanGraphs’ offensive value. The club was tied for ninth in both hits with 1,347 and OPS at .726.
Bendix acknowledged the complexity of evaluating the position. “Evaluating a hitting coach is very difficult,” he said. “That role is very, very difficult. I think we have a unique structure here, not just in the hitting department, but in all of our departments, with a director, a director of hitting, in this case, that oversees our hitting space. And so really looking for that sort of alignment from top to bottom with our director, with our entire hitting coaches. That’s what we’ll be prioritizing.”
Manager Clayton McCullough will return for 2027, along with assistant hitting coaches Chris Hess and Corbin Day. The Marlins have not announced a timeline for naming Guerrero’s replacement.
