ORLANDO — Orlando Magic forward Noah Penda has knocked down six of 14 three-point attempts through his first two NBA Summer League games, a 42.9 percent clip that represents a significant jump from his rookie-season mark and signals potential growth in the skill most critical to his role.

Penda shot 30 of 93 from beyond the arc last season, a 32.3 percent rate that was better than many projected but still left room for improvement. The Magic ranked 23rd in three-point percentage directly off kickouts from the paint and 27th in three-point percentage in transition last season — two areas where Penda’s shooting off the catch will be essential in an off-the-ball role alongside stars Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner.

Penda’s defensive versatility has been equally notable. He recorded two blocks in the final minute of a win over Miami and has shown the ability to pressure ball handlers in the backcourt, a skill the Magic’s analysis compared to that of Minnesota Timberwolves forward Jaden McDaniels and Portland Trail Blazers forward Toumani Camara. His instincts have produced deflections and strips, though fouling remains a concern — he committed nine fouls across the two games.

In transition, Penda’s ball-handling at his size has stood out. The Magic have emphasized a grab-and-go approach after defensive rebounds, with Penda joining Banchero, Wagner, Anthony Black and Jalen Suggs as players capable of pushing the pace and initiating offense before opponents can set their half-court defense. His footwork in the half court, including pivot moves to create separation, has added another dimension.

Penda’s next opportunity to build on his summer performance comes as the Magic’s Summer League schedule continues in Las Vegas.
