LAS VEGAS — The Orlando Magic capped their 2026 NBA Summer League slate with a 103-97 victory over the Boston Celtics on Saturday, finishing 4-1 for their best summer record since returning to Las Vegas for summer action in 2018.
Malik Reneau, who played high school ball at Montverde Academy before college stints at Indiana and Miami, led the Magic with 19 points. Au’Diese Toney, who started his professional career with the Magic’s G League affiliate when it was based in Lakeland, added 18 points. None of Orlando’s contracted players — including Jase Richardson, Noah Penda, and two-way players Colin Castleton, Alex Morales and Izaiyah Nelson — suited up for the finale.
Richardson and Penda were the headliners across their three summer league appearances. Richardson averaged 18.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.7 steals while shooting seven of 14 from beyond the arc. Penda averaged 15.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.7 blocks and 1.7 steals, connecting on eight of his 17 3-point attempts — a critical development given that outside shooting was the area of his game most in need of improvement after his rookie season.
Magic summer league head coach D.J. Bakker praised Penda’s all-around impact. “He wanted to play every game and he never wanted to come out. You love that. He’s a competitor. He wanted to be in the gym. He was coming back that night before we got here. He puts the time into his game and he did a great job of staying simple offensively. We want you to screen and roll. We want you to shoot the three. That’s why he shot such a good percentage from three - he took the right type of threes. Then defensively, you saw the physicality, the fight, the versatility, guarding the other team’s best wing players. He showed a lot - not just on offense, not just on the shooting numbers - but to me the buying into the role and the execution of what we are asking him to do. And then obviously impacting winning - and that’s what it’s all about,” Bakker said.
Several players from the Osceola Magic, which posted an Eastern Conference-best 26-10 regular-season record in the G League last year, made their presence felt in the finale. Will Baker, the 6-foot-11, 240-pound center who backed up Castleton in Osceola, tallied 15 points and six rebounds in 22 minutes against the Celtics. Phillip Wheeler, a 6-foot-8 forward who averaged 14.9 points during the G League regular season, finished with 10 points and hit a pair of game-sealing free throws with 16 seconds remaining.
The Magic’s roster now heads back to Orlando, where Richardson, Penda and the rest of the contracted players will prepare for training camp ahead of the 2026-27 NBA season.
