Dozens of families lined up before dawn at Preserve Park in Pembroke Park for a free food giveaway that provided relief to residents struggling with rising costs and missed paychecks affecting tens of thousands of Transportation Security Administration workers nationwide. The event was part of the town’s monthly partnership with Farm Share, distributing fruits, vegetables, protein and other essentials to community members facing financial hardship.
“It’s really hard right now, like, especially with the food going up - the food prices, gas prices - it’s really helpful to have a program like this to help people in the neighborhood,” said attendee Yvette Fluker. Lines of cars had formed before dawn, and by late morning, most of the food had been distributed to families seeking assistance.
“Times are really hard right now, so this is a good help for us,” said South Florida senior Carmen Cornell, Fluker’s mother. The 89-year-old resident emphasized her need for the assistance, saying “I’m an old woman. I’m 89, and I don’t get nothing much. So when I heard about the food giveaway, I’m happy to come. I can hardly walk.”
The food distribution comes as tens of thousands of TSA workers nationwide have gone without full paychecks for more than a week, leaving many federal employees scrambling to cover basic expenses. The timing of the Pembroke Park event highlighted the broader economic pressures facing South Florida families, from federal workers to seniors on fixed incomes dealing with inflation.
Volunteers of all ages helped keep the event running smoothly, including children who assisted with loading groceries into cars. Ten-year-old volunteer Nia explained her motivation for helping: “It’s pretty important to me because helping your community makes a very strong impact.” Fellow 10-year-old volunteer Senai added perspective on the current economic climate, saying “In this economy these days, it’s very hard for people to afford groceries and stuff, so it’s very helpful.”
The monthly partnership between Pembroke Park and Farm Share represents an ongoing effort to address food insecurity in Broward County communities. Organizers acknowledged that while the event cannot solve every challenge families are facing, it provides some relief and a sense of community support during difficult economic times.
