SEATTLE — Tampa Bay Rays closer Bryan Baker converted his 23rd consecutive save in a 3-2 win over the Mariners, surpassing Fernando Rodney’s franchise record of 22 straight set in 2012.

The 31-year-old Baker, who earned his first All-Star selection this season, lowered his ERA to 1.55 after working around a leadoff single by Julio Rodríguez in the ninth, inducing a lineout and a 3-6-1 double play to end the game. Baker hadn’t allowed a run since June 24 before surrendering a solo shot to Rodríguez the previous night.

“The guys were joking around saying I gotta wear the slanted hat next time out,” Baker said with a smile, referencing Rodney’s signature celebration. “So we’ll see if I can pull that off. I’m not sure.”

The victory came on an unplanned bullpen day after starter Griffin Jax was scratched hours before first pitch with right elbow discomfort. The Rays deployed seven relievers — Casey Legumina, Cam Booser, Steven Matz, Garrett Cleavinger, Tyler Wells, Kevin Kelly and Baker — and the group limited Seattle to two solo home runs from Josh Naylor.

“Outstanding effort by all of them,” manager Kevin Cash said.

Kelly, who worked the eighth inning, hasn’t allowed a run since July 7 and has surrendered just two hits in that span, lowering his ERA to 2.00. Both he and Baker allowed a leadoff single in their respective innings before each induced a double play.

“Might be the grittiest win I’ve been a part of,” Kelly said.

The Rays’ offense didn’t need much. Victor Mesa Jr. tied the game 1-1 with a 412-foot homer into right field in the fourth, and Richie Palacios delivered a two-out, two-run single in the sixth for a 3-1 lead. The bullpen performance followed a similar effort earlier in the week, when the same relief corps held the line in a 9-7 comeback win over the Rockies after newly acquired starter Freddy Peralta lasted only 3 2/3 innings.

“It’s not easy to do. I think we pieced it together really well,” Baker said. “I think Cash did a good job of knowing when to pull the trigger on the next guy, and everybody just did their part. It’s pretty amazing to see.”

Mesa Jr. said the club embraces the grind. “We are ready for those types of games and whatever games that come at that moment,” he said.

The Rays continue their series in Seattle with the rubber match on Sunday.
