ST. PETERSBURG - Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash confirmed Drew Rasmussen will start Game 1 of the American League Division Series at Tropicana Field on Saturday night but left every other rotation decision open, with the team still waiting to learn whether they will face the New York Yankees or the Boston Red Sox.

“Very confident [saying] Ras will pitch Game 1,” Cash said during the Rays’ workout Wednesday at Tropicana Field, “and then we’ll have more decisions as the week unfolds.”

The five pitchers who finished the regular season in the Rays’ rotation - Rasmussen, Freddy Peralta, Nick Martinez, Griffin Jax and Ian Seymour - are all expected to contribute in the postseason, though the ALDS schedule’s built-in off-days require only a three-man rotation. Martinez, Jax and Seymour have recent bullpen experience, giving Cash flexibility in how he deploys them. Seymour worked in relief during the Rays’ regular-season finale in Philadelphia.

“I think it’s pretty obvious to us that our five starters have contributed immensely to the success of our team this year, and we’ll find a way to get them all in there contributing,” Cash said. “Nothing has been decided, and nothing’s been lined up other than Game 1. But speaking to them, just very generally, they’re excited to do whatever is asked.”

On the injury front, relievers Tyler Wells and Garrett Cleavinger - both on the injured list with forearm tightness - each threw an inning in Tuesday’s six-inning intrasquad scrimmage at the Trop and “looked really good” according to Cash, with velocities suggesting full health. Both are scheduled to pitch in Thursday’s scrimmage, which should clarify their availability for the ALDS roster. Outfielder Chandler Simpson, who missed the final two regular-season games after fouling a ball off the top of his right foot, ran on the field Wednesday and is also expected to play Thursday. “If everything goes well, there should be no doubt about his readiness for the ALDS,” Cash said.

Despite the unusual stretch of near-inactivity following roughly 7 1/2 months of near-daily baseball dating back to Spring Training, the mood inside Tropicana Field appeared relaxed. Third baseman Junior Caminero was dancing at the start of Wednesday’s workout.

“We have to play our style of baseball, but also throughout this week we just kind of have to be calm, we have to be relaxed, we have to be ourselves,” Caminero said through interpreter Kevin Vera. “We’re paying attention to see who we might play on Saturday - whether that’s Boston, whether that’s New York - and just get ready for them and stay with the mindset that we’ve had all year and be focused for Saturday. That’s when everything starts.”

Cash, who watched the Wild Card Series games earlier this week as both a fan and fellow manager, acknowledged the waiting has not been easy. “Long. It’s long. It’s a long week,” he said. “A lot of time on my hands, but that’ll change Saturday.”

Thursday’s scrimmage at Tropicana Field will be the Rays’ final tuneup before the ALDS opens Saturday night.
