ST. PETERSBURG - The Tampa Bay Rays exercised shortstop Taylor Walls’ $3.1 million club option for the 2027 season, rewarding the newly minted Gold Glove winner five days after the American League champion Rays dropped Game 5 of the World Series to the Milwaukee Brewers at Tropicana Field.
Walls, 30, posted 3.5 Wins Above Replacement this season according to Baseball-Reference, a figure driven almost entirely by his defense. A career .200/.291/.298 hitter, Walls played 124 games - his highest total since playing 142 in 2022 - and his option year was tacked onto the $2.45 million club option the Rays had already exercised for the past season. With Monday’s decision locking in his salary, Walls is now set to enter free agency heading into the 2028 campaign.
The Rays also made several other roster moves Monday. Tampa Bay selected the contracts of reliever Alexander Alberto, 25, and outfielder Jack Suwinski to add both to the 40-man roster, preventing them from becoming Minor League free agents. Alberto finished the season with Triple-A Durham and features a triple-digit cutter. Suwinski was acquired from the Dodgers prior to the Trade Deadline to bolster the Rays’ MLB-ready outfield depth and also finished the year at Durham.
The flurry of moves came as the Rays worked through a series of roster obligations with the offseason underway. On Saturday, Tampa Bay exercised ace Drew Rasmussen’s $20 million club option for next season - a franchise-record single-season salary - though the team noted Rasmussen could still be traded. Designated hitter Yandy Díaz’s $13 million option for 2027 had already vested automatically when he reached 500 plate appearances in August. As expected, the Rays declined mutual options with starter Nick Martinez and center fielder Cedric Mullins.
With the 60-day injured list inactive during the offseason, the Rays reinstated starter Ryan Pepiot, reliever Edwin Uceta and outfield prospect Jacob Melton to the 40-man roster. Pepiot, who required season-ending hip surgery, has graduated from rehabilitation and is expected to have a normal offseason. Uceta missed the entire season with a shoulder injury sustained in Spring Training. Melton, 26, played 45 games for Triple-A Durham but was blocked in part by the emergence of right fielder Victor Mesa Jr. before finishing the season on the 60-day IL with a right hamstring strain. Right-hander Jonathan Heasley, who made just one appearance in May before an elbow injury ended his season, was removed from the roster and became a Minor League free agent after clearing waivers.
Infielder Nick Madrigal also cleared waivers and elected free agency, and the Rays traded Minor League right-hander Evan Reifert to the Houston Astros for cash considerations. Tampa Bay separately re-signed right-hander Kodi Whitley, 31, to a Minor League contract with a non-roster invitation to Spring Training. Whitley posted a 2.81 ERA across 32 innings in 25 appearances for Triple-A Durham this season. The Rays enter the offseason with 39 players on their 40-man roster.
