ST. PETERSBURG — The Tampa Bay Rays head into the second half of the season ranked third in MLB’s Power Rankings, trailing only the two-time defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers and the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Rays erased a three-game deficit behind the New York Yankees in the AL East and flipped it into a three-game lead at the All-Star break over a span of less than three weeks. A division title would be the franchise’s first since 2021 and its fifth ever.
If the Rays can hold their position atop the AL East, they would likely secure home-field advantage throughout the American League postseason. The Yankees, ranked sixth in the Power Rankings, will need to get Aaron Judge back and healthy to mount a challenge.
The Rays’ surge comes as the Trade Deadline looms less than three weeks away, a window that could reshape the AL East race. Within the division, the Boston Red Sox have climbed from 23rd to 15th in the rankings after winning 14 of 16 games and nine straight — all on the road — heading into the break. The Toronto Blue Jays, last year’s World Series runners-up, sit at 19th after a 6-12 stretch to close the first half.
The Miami Marlins, Florida’s other MLB franchise, earned the biggest jump in the rankings, rising from 11th to eighth after being named baseball’s best team in July. The Marlins have surged into Wild Card position and inserted themselves into the NL East race, where the Atlanta Braves hold a two-game lead.
The second half opens with the Trade Deadline approaching at the end of the month, a stretch that will determine whether the Rays can convert their first-half momentum into an October run.
