ST. PETERSBURG — The Tampa Bay Rays have spent much of the 2026 season as the American League’s best team, yet they enter the Aug. 3 Trade Deadline with a surprising number of holes to fill — chief among them another bat to lengthen a lineup that runs thin beyond its top three hitters.

The Rays rank near the bottom of the league in OPS at second base, shortstop and the outfield as a whole, according to MLB.com’s assessment of every club’s deadline needs. Tampa Bay’s offense has leaned heavily on Yandy Díaz, Jonathan Aranda and Junior Caminero, and the drop-off behind that trio has left the club shopping for reinforcements.

“It’s a little odd that the Rays have spent so much of this season as the AL’s best team while having so many areas to address before the Trade Deadline,” MLB.com’s Adam Berry wrote. Beyond a bat, Berry noted the Rays could also use another starter to fill out the rotation and a high-leverage reliever.

Tampa Bay’s front office faces a familiar balancing act: adding offensive production without diminishing the up-the-middle defense that has anchored the club’s run. The Rays have historically been among the most active deadline buyers when positioned atop the standings, and the current roster’s defensive identity could limit the pool of realistic targets to players who can contribute with the glove as well as the bat.

Across the AL East, several division rivals are also hunting upgrades. The Baltimore Orioles need bullpen help after losing closer Ryan Helsley and left-hander Keegan Akin to elbow injuries, leaving the club closing by committee. The New York Yankees are seeking a starting catcher, with Minnesota’s Ryan Jeffers identified as a potential target after Austin Wells’ power numbers have disappointed. The Boston Red Sox are looking for a right-handed bat to take advantage of Fenway Park, while the Toronto Blue Jays need a fifth starter after losing José Berríos and Cody Ponce for the season.

The Trade Deadline is set for Aug. 3, giving the Rays and their AL East competitors roughly four weeks to finalize deals.
