JACKSONVILLE — Trevor Lawrence, coming off a career-high fifth-place finish in the 2025 Most Valuable Player balloting, says his comfort level in Head Coach Liam Coen’s offense has transformed heading into his sixth NFL season as the Jaguars’ starting quarterback.
“I feel like I can play so much faster,” Lawrence said on the team’s O-Zone Podcast as the Jaguars’ offseason program wrapped up Wednesday. “Just having the system down, there’s so much more confidence when you step on the field that we know what we’re doing.”
Lawrence described the mental demands of Coen’s scheme as initially taxing but said the second year has eased that burden. “Now, I feel so much more comfortable and the stress level is so much lower,” he said. “The attention to detail is super high, though. It’s not like I’m relaxing out there, but as far as the confidence and knowing what I’m doing … now I’m paying attention to exactly how the defense is responding.”
The quarterback called the progress from last spring to now “astronomical,” pointing to gains across the entire offense during the two-month offseason program. “What we’re getting to in our system, the timing, guys being on the same page of protection, the communication up front … all that stuff is so much further along because we’re a year in the system,” Lawrence said.
Perhaps the most significant development was the improved deep-ball connection between Lawrence and wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr., a relationship that misfired at times during the 2025 season. “Last year at times we just weren’t on the same page for whatever reason,” Lawrence said. “We have taken a huge step in that area. He’s so fast, running by guys all the time. A lot of it was, looking at myself and saying, ‘OK, where can I improve and get better? How can I get him the ball more accurately on time down the field, give him opportunities to go run under the ball and make plays?’”
Lawrence said the work between himself, Thomas and Coen has been deliberate. “It’s starting to pay off and it’s just the beginning,” he said.
The quarterback praised the roster’s effort across the offseason program, calling the past two months “awesome.” “Just really impressed with the whole team, how guys have come out ready to work,” Lawrence said. “It’s a short time, but it’s a big part of the year where you can gain an edge over your opponents.” The Jaguars will reconvene for training camp in late July in Jacksonville.
